How this calculation works
Percent to goal = achieved ÷ goal × 100. Remaining = max(goal − achieved, 0). Above goal = max(achieved − goal, 0).
Enter the amount achieved so far and your goal in the same units, then press Calculate. Use this for a fundraising target, completed tasks, or another nonnegative quantity. Progress compares an achieved amount with a target, rather than measuring change from a previous value.
How to use this calculator
- Enter or choose amount achieved.
- Enter or choose goal amount.
- Select Calculate and review the result and assumptions.
Worked example
If you have raised 750 toward a goal of 1,000, progress is 750 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 75%, with 250 remaining. At 1,200 achieved against the same goal, progress is 120%, nothing remains, and the amount above goal is 200.
Assumptions and limitations
The achieved amount must be zero or positive and the goal must be greater than zero. Use matching units; do not mix dollars with tasks or monthly amounts with annual targets. Progress is not capped at 100%. This tool does not forecast a completion date, measure percent change, or support negative targets. Browser floating-point arithmetic and display rounding apply; results outside the finite numeric range are rejected.
Frequently asked questions
Can progress exceed 100%?
Yes. Exceeding the target produces progress above 100%. The remaining amount stays at zero and the amount above goal shows the excess.
Why can't the goal be zero?
Progress divides by the goal. Division by zero is undefined, even when the achieved amount is also zero.
Is percent to goal the same as percentage change?
No. Percent to goal divides an achieved amount by a target. Percentage change compares the difference between a new and an original value with the original baseline.
Can I use this for money or fractional amounts?
Yes. Both inputs may contain decimals. Use the same currency or unit for both; no currency conversion or rounding to whole tasks is applied.
