Time duration calculator

Find hours and minutes between times, with an optional break.

How this calculation works

Net minutes = end minutes − start minutes + 1,440 if next day − break minutes. Decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60.

Enter start and end times using the time fields. Select next day for an overnight interval and subtract an unpaid break if needed.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter or choose start time.
  2. Enter or choose end time.
  3. Enter or choose end date.
  4. Enter or choose unpaid break (minutes).
  5. Select Calculate and review the result and assumptions.

Worked example

From 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours, or 8.0 decimal hours.

Assumptions and limitations

Clock-time arithmetic only, up to 24 hours. Time zones, daylight-saving changes, overtime, and payroll rules are not modeled.
